Mersey 1st XI dominate to move 2nd in the league

9 May 2023

Heaton Mersey 1st XI vs Winnington Park 1st XI @ Oakley Villas

Heaton Mersey lost the toss and were asked to bat.

Heaton Mersey 235-5 from 50 overs

Winnington Park 82 all out from 24.4 overs

On a damp and overcast day, Mersey were put into bat on what looked bowler friendly conditions. With this in mind, the Mersey batters set about their business with great grit and application on a difficult wicket. Openers Josh Ainscough and Anre Schutte showed great patience and were methodical in the way they dissected the Winnington Park bowling in the early periods. After both passed 50 (Ainscough - 51, Schutte - 50), they fell leaving Mersey with the foundations to press on. John Barnett was the pick of the proceeding onslaught, finishing on 65* and Mersey on 235-5 from their 50 overs.

After some rain delayed the start of the second innings, it did not dampen Mersey's momentum. Luke Marshall opening the bowling from the nearly named 'Luke Marshall End' took 2 wickets in the first over. Along with his opening partner Hassan Rashid, Mersey had reduced the visitors to 8-4. Winnington Park's captain Cory Devanny led a little fightback to get the score to 44-4 before Marshall and Ian Hughes turned on their magic again to race through the middle and lower order to make it 47-9. Luke Marshall with figures of 10 overs 5-24 in his opening spell and a mention to Ian Hughes of a remarkable 4 overs 3-0. All that was left was a Neil Mountjoy leg spin rippa to seal the deal and Mersey win by 153 runs.

Next week Ainscough takes his troops to Warrington looking to continue their unbeaten start to the season.
