U12s 2024 season recaps & look ahead to the 2025 season

16 Apr 2025

Having joined forces with the year below last season, this year’s U12s will be back to being the younger group in their two-year age grouping, playing largely in U13s competitions.

2024 season recap

It was another successful season for the U12s (as U11s) last year (in combination with the U11s, who of course were then U10s – keeping up?).  In the High Peak league, Mersey Phoenix got to the semi-finals, beaten by Mersey Magic, who went on to win the title.  Aside from the intra-Mersey match, both sides only lost once each in this league and both sides topped their groups, an amazing achievement.

Whilst the High Peak victories above were generally secured by outstanding performance by the U12s, this was even more so in the Cheshire league, a tougher league, particularly in the knock-out stages.  They finished top of their division, then won the quarter-final and semi-final stages, before  being thwarted by the weather in the final and ultimately sharing the spoils, a Heaton Mersey Cheshire league-winning first.

Meanwhile, in the South Manchester league, proper Twenty20 cricket, Mersey finished mid-table in the first league, moving into the second division, which they then won.

For the summer competitions, the U11s finished top of the South Manchester summer cup division on net run rate, losing in the semi-final, and 3rd in the High Peak summer competition.

For the end-of-year presentation, the awards were as follows:

  • Best batter: Sam
  • Best bowler: Stan
  • Players’ player: Zayaan
  • Coaches’ player: Felix
  • Best fielder: James
  • Spirit of cricket: Arjo

2025 season preview

The U12s are entering two leagues in 2025, with one team in the High Peak league and one in the South Manchester league.  At U13s level, these are both proper Twenty20 format, i.e. “if you’re out, you’re out”, and now featuring LBWs (technically these are allowable at U11s level but it’s generally considered to be against the spirit).  There will not be a team entered into the Cheshire league this year.
