Monday 8th May: Heaton Mersey U13 46/0 (40b) vs Wavertree U11 abandoned – Mersey Cup (Scorecard)

Tom Sinclair and William Wall got the team off to a good start but the rain came down and the match was abandoned.  That put Heaton Mersey in the final against Liverpool…

Monday 8th May: Heaton Mersey U13 61 all out (86b) lost to Liverpool U13 63/2 (57b) by 8 wickets – Mersey Cup (Scorecard)

Heaton Mersey were up against tough opposition in the final.  Batting first, Farhad Ahmed was the standout batter, with 26 off 29 balls, out of a total of 61 all out.  Liverpool put on 44 runs for the second wicket, which all but gave them victory with a chunk of deliveries to spare.  It was a brave attempt by Heaton Mersey in a tournament decimated by the poor weather.

Tuesday 9th May: Heaton Mersey U13 85/8 (20) lost to Cheadle Hulme Ladybridge U13 78/8 (20 by 7 runs – High Peak league (Scorecard)

Close game tonight against Cheadle Hulme Ladybridge which went down to the final over.  HMCC bowled first restricting CHL to 85/8 off 20 overs.  The run chase started well but we then lost a few quick wickets along the way.  We finished on 78/8 so just 8 runs short of the win.  Well done to all the players and particularly to Ollie for some determined batting in the final few overs.

Wednesday 10th May: Heaton Mersey U12 vs Cheadle Hulme U13 85/4 (14) abandoned – High Peak league (Scorecard)

Heaton Mersey won the toss and elected to field, with dark clouds gathering once more after a showery day.  After one rain break that stopped play, the players got back out there, but the rain came again and the match was abandoned, with Cheadle Hulme on 85/4.  Welcome to the cricket season!

Friday 12th May: Heaton Mersey U13 vs Ashley U13 conceded – Cheshire league (Scorecard)

A concession by Ashley gave Heaton Mersey all four points.

Sunday 14th May: Heaton Mersey U13 108/8 (20) beat Romiley U13 53/8 (20) by 55 runs – Cheshire league (Scorecard)

Great first win of the season for the U13 Academy team playing against Romiley at Heaton Mersey Village.  Mersey batted first and runs from Charlie (25), Isaac (16), Jacob (9) and Aaron (9 n.o) helped the team finish on 108/8 after 20 overs.

Adan opened the bowling, taking a double wicket maiden in the first over, followed up by a wicket from Ellie in the second over.  The good start continued and was supported by great bowling throughout the team.  Wickets from Jacob (2), Aaron (1), Charlie (1) and Matthew (1) helped restrict Romiley to 53/8 at the close.  The team fielded excellently, with only 3 extras conceded and a great catch from Isaac at slip.

Well done to all the players.

Monday 15th May – Heaton Mersey U13 beat Sale U13 by 29 runs - Cheshire Vitality T20 U13 Club Cup - Round 2 (Scorecard)

This was the first cup match of the season after a bye in round 1 and captain W Wall won the toss, electing to bat first.  W Wall and A Reid laid a solid foundation with both retiring on 30no.  J Taylor and M Noble accelerated the run rate to close on 124/3 off 20 overs.

J Haynes opened the bowling with a wicket but Sale’s standout batsman, J Pachigolla, kept some interest in the contest with a wonderful 33no off 30 balls.  An inspired run out executed by W Wall preceded wickets from M Noble, J Taylor and I Browne including 2 superb catches from B Aspinall.

Decent fielding throughout the innings from D Parry, R Khan, A Prabaharan and including E Pagan’s missile-like throws from the boundary restricted Sale to 95/5. Into round 3…

Tuesday 16th May – Heaton Mersey U12 108/6 (20) lost to Didsbury U13 110/5 (16.3) by 5 wickets – High Peak league (Scorecard)

On the Tuesday, Heaton Mersey hosted Didsbury.  Mersey batted first and posted an impressive 108/6.  Notable mentions for Harry Webley and George Sinclair, who scored 27 and 25 not out respectively.

Despite some impressive bowling, with wickets for Adan Ali, George Sinclair, Zayan Ali and Emre James, Didsbury were a little too strong and got home with 3 overs to spare.

Friday 19th May – Cheadle U13 lost to Heaton Mersey U13 by 17 runs – South Manchester league (Scorecard)

Heavy showers and dark clouds of doubt welcomed HMCC U13s to Cheadle CC this evening; however, HMCC captain I Browne won the toss and elected to bat in the light.  The openers set the pace for the batting, with I Browne scoring 30no off 34 balls alongside M Noble 31no off 32 balls.  Cheadle’s K Vyas spun a web around the middle order (3 wickets for 8 runs) but W Wall (35no off 17 balls) and A Reid (11no off 7 balls) ensured a good total of 135.

J Haynes and R Khan opened the bowling with some nice deliveries against skilled batsmen. J Haynes snared their opener thanks to a magnificent overhead catch by D Booth at square leg.  Some excellent batting followed and Cheadle were ahead of the run rate before an inspired run out by W Wall stopped K Vyas in full flow (26 off 23 balls). Lovely bowling from H Stackhouse-Pepper including a rare maiden and a wicket with another fine catch by B Aspinall.  D Booth caught another off his own bowling before W Wall, M Noble and J Taylor each took a wicket.

There were a couple of missed opportunities in the field but excellent fielding and encouragement from A Prabaharan and a brilliant run out by J Taylor restricted Cheadle’s run rate in the closing overs.  A spirited, skilful and sporting Cheadle U13 finished on 118.  A lot to enjoy in a brilliant win for HMCC u13 built upon a very strong batting performance.

Sunday 21st May – Heaton Mersey U13 95/2 (10.2) beat Hale Barns U13 92/4 (20) by 8 wickets – Cheshire league (Scorecard)

On a lovely May morning, the Heaton Mersey U13s Academy team faced Hale Barns in the Cheshire cricket league. Mersey won the toss and elected to bowl first, Ellie and Jack opened the bowling and restricted Hale to 6 runs off the first 4 overs, setting the tone for the rest of the innings. Corbin took two wickets in his spin spell including a lovely caught and bowled. Ben was the other wicket taker, neatly bowling the Hale batter out. Hale ended up scoring 92 off 20 overs in the 1st innings.

Mersey in the run chase started well with Angus retiring on 32, Jacob hitting a quick 23, with Harry batting well supporting the openers. Will scored a quick fire 24 including a massive 6. Mersey chased down the Hale score in 10 overs which is a testament to the strike rate of the Mersey batters.

Player of the match was Corbin for his two quick wickets in the middle of the Hale innings but well done to the Mersey players who all contributed to a brilliant team performance.

Sunday 21st May – Marple U13 80/5 (20) beat Heaton Mersey U13 28 all out (14.3) by 52 runs – High Peak league (Scorecard)

The game was played at Compstall.  Mersey won the toss and elected to bowl in what looked to be near perfect conditions.  We restricted Marple to 80 with a good performance in the field.  Two wickets for Angus McVey were backed up by some good fielding and wicket contributions from Alf Gittins and Francis Claridge.  A special mention goes to U11 player Owen Reid, who stepped up and bowled beautifully, getting his reward with a wicket.

However, the run chase fizzled out quickly after some good bowling and poor decision making.  We lost a succession of cheap wickets with the only defence coming from Alf G, who was unbeaten in 31 balls.  Another special mention goes to U11 player Stanley Shaw, who defended his wicket bravely against Marple’s quickest bowler.  He took a fierce ball in the thigh, then bravely carried on.  We were all out for 28.
